General Managers Update - November 2017

17/11/2017

November is halfway through, Christmas is only 5 weeks away and you start to ask yourself where the year has gone… The good news is at the Club we have had a tough year but battled through and we will post a small surplus when we present the full financials to the members on Tuesday 5 December at the AGM.

So we have reset and looking forward to achieving a heap more improvements in 2018. But its already started and wow its been busy around the Club the last few weeks.

9th Green Retaining Wall

Let’s start with the 9th Pond retaining wall which has been not only an eye sore but a safety issue for the last 6 months especially after the flood. This was a major project that included the pond in the carpark that used to be part of the River Sands water path however hasn’t been for a few years now. So rather than have a stagnant, untidy pond which was also unsafe we have filled it in and created extra car park spaces.

This then allowed the 30 tonne excavator to build a path into the pond and redo the pond walls, this time with rock. By using rock we will have a wall that will last for a long time unlike the timber used before which has now deteriorated. There are some finishing touches to complete but the bulk of work has now been completed on this rather large project.

I would like to thank member Wayne Gurney and his company RDS for their professionalism in helping complete this project.

2nd Hole Renovation

As many of you will know the 2nd hole was taken out of play late October so we can fully renovate the entire hole. This includes a green resurfacing, bunker reshaping, new tee and new path. It’s a massive job but now well underway. The green will be stolonised in the next week or so and you will see the tee change shape a little as well as we enlarge it and improve this area as well. We anticpate the hole will reopen sometime in late March.

Power Pole – 1st tee

Energex have replaced and relocated the power pole that used to sit next to the 1st Blue Tee. This is now a much taller pole and is closer to the Clubhouse. We were without power on Tuesday 14 November but this was scheduled during the green renovations to reduce the impact on the Club’s operations.

We are also working with Energex on a plan to remove the pole on the 1st hole on the edge of the lake but this will take some time and extra planning. Hopefully when all done this will be a significant improvement on the visual aspect of the 1st hole.

Green & Tees Renovations

This week we completed a full renovation on all greens and tees. The greens received a major renovation and the tees were also scarified and sanded. So they will be a little rough for a couple of weeks but this is an essential part to the annual maintenance program and keeping the course in a healthy and top condition.

Australian Open

As I write this update I am preparing myself for another Australian Open where I will head down to The Australian Golf Club to work as a Rules Official for the week. Its one of my favourite weeks of the year and with the likes of Jordan Speith and Jason Day in the field is bound to be a great event.

PGA Championship

After the Open I am looking forward to getting down to Royal Pines to see the PGA Championship. Credit to the PGA for their efforts in securing some great players this year and this could possible be the best PGA Championship ever. I encourage you to get down there and watch some of the golf including Sergio, the reigning Masters Champion. It will be a great week of golf on the Gold Coast.

Annual General Meeting

Just a reminder that we have our Annual General Meeting coming up on Tuesday 5 December in the Clubhouse from 7pm. We have created a booking sheet so please let us know if you plan to come. We need 20 members from the 7 day, Corporate and Life Member categories to create a quorum which in the past has been difficult to achieve. So if you have time and an interest in how we went this year and what is happening with your Club then please make time. We will offer some finger food and a few drinks after the meeting where you can catch up with the Board and General Manager as well.

If you have any General Business please submit it in writing to me by Tuesday 28 November so it can be tabled at the meeting.

Election for Vice-President

Members please note that we are conducting an election for the position of Vice President which will start on Saturday 25 November and end on Sunday 3 December. Mark Smith and Hans Jebbink are the candidates. For ballot papers please see the Administration Desk during the election dates. 7 Day, Life and Corporate Members are eligible to vote.

More Information for members

That’s about it from me.

I look forward to seeing you at the Club or possibly at the Open or PGA over the coming weeks.
