General Managers Update - June 2017

The Club is starting to get a heartbeat again and whilst the recent rains have hampered our progress a little we are certainly ahead of where I thought we would be back in April. It’s great to see many people again around the Club and that atmosphere is what makes the Club an enjoyable place to be. It gets a bit depressing when no-one is here but fingers crossed that is now behind us.

New Maintenance Shed

It’s been a couple of years planning however we are now almost fully moved into the new maintenance facility. The final piece of the puzzle was a new hoist that was installed on the 9th June and the boys are now most of the way through moving which itself is a fairly big job considering they have been in the old shed for well over 25 years.

Carbrook Classic - 21 – 23 July

Make sure if you haven’t already put the dates for the Classic in your diary then I would encourage you to do so. We have the Vets Classic on the 20 July as well for those that are Veterans members. The sponsors day on Friday 21 July is one of the highlights on the Club’s calendar. Those members wishing to consider sponsoring the Classic can download the packages.

Keen to bring a friend who is not a member to the Classic weekend – pass on the visitor’s entry form.

Timesheets will open on Friday 30 June at 7am for both Saturday and Sunday.

Queensland Senior Men’s Amateur Championship

Golf Queensland have brought the Senior Men’s Amateur Championship back to Carbrook this year and will be a pleasure to host this prestigious Championship that we host each 4 years. It will take place from Monday 31 July to Wednesday 2 August. While we are waiting for advice on how big the field is it’s likely that the course will be closed to about 12pm each day.

PGA Trainee Pro-Am – Monday 28 August

Angus Porter our Trainee Professional is well underway in organising this year’s Trainee Pro-Am. The Club won’t be hosting a Legends Pro-Am this year so we are getting behind the Trainee Pro-Am and its sure to be another sold out event. So don’t wait until the last minute as you will probably miss out. Angus has put some sponsorship opportunities together if you are interested in lending your support. There are some quality young golfers coming through the ranks and it will be a great event with one of the biggest purses on their calendar.

Membership Offer

As we come into July and only 3 months from the end of our financial year we will again be offering our special of 15 months for the price of 12 to entice new members to join our great Club. Current members that introduce a new member are rewarded as well with up to 7500 Loyalty Points ($75) to spend at the Club depending on the category of the new member. So if you know someone that is interested please let them know there is no better time to join the club.

Inside the Ropes Podcast

Golf Australia have launched a new podcast which had grabbed my attention. To be honest I have not been a podcast listener but it’s actually very good and a great way to stay up to date with what’s happening in the world of golf. If you spend a bit of time in the car it can make the trip a bit more enjoyable as well. Great work from the GA team to create this show and I would highly recommend.

Listen to the Podcast.

Lenz and Smith win Match Play Championship

Congratulations to Melissa Lenz and Clive Smith who won their finals in the Handicap Match Play Championship. Clive qualified in 6th place while Melissa in 4th place and played great golf through the Match Play section to win their events. Both will receive a Championship Medal to remember their wins by.

Four-Ball Stroke Play Championships

Congratulations to Sean Morris and Ian Travers for their recent win in the Club’s Four-Ball Stroke Play Championship (Gross) with rounds of 67, 69 – 136 to win by 6 strokes.

The winners of the Nett Championship were Daniel Haack and Joel Lines with 2 remarkable rounds of 57, 63 – 120 to win by 5 shots from Anthony Lovegrove and Mickey Stephenson.

Four-Ball Match Play Championships

Following the Stroke Play section the leading 4 Nett (eligible) teams have qualified for the Match Play section. The draw will kick off on the 1 July with the Semi Finals and then the final the week after. Good luck and congratulations to those teams that have qualified.

New Cart Fleet

Many of you may have experienced one of our new Yamaha carts which is part of our fleet upgrade. We are waiting for another 12 to complete the full fleet upgrade which is likely in August. The new Yamaha carts are petrol which is different to what we have had in the past with the electric models. A few people have asked why the change and I am happy to share that with you.

There were two main reasons – the first is the value of the carts after 4 years when we will own them. Electric carts due to their need for battery replacement are worth approximately half of the petrol cart. With 32 carts this means our asset of 32 carts will be worth twice as much. The second reason is that our new carts have a fully independent suspension. Not being that mechanically minded myself but I was extremely impressed in the difference of the ride this cart has over its competitors and the old carts especially over the sections of our course that are quite bumpy. There were other contributing factors but at least this may give you an idea of why we went down this path.

Well that's it for this month. The course is continually improving and we are looking forward to a busy playing season over the coming months.
